@zaydupree: why theres a noticeable gay male accent, but no noticeable lesbian accent #language #linguistics #LanguageLearning #accent #TikTokLearningCampaign
There is a lesbian accent. Or if not accent then pitch. Straight women tend to pitch up and lesbians allow their voice to sit in a more natural and thus lower range because they are not adjusting their voice to a male audience.

THERE IS A LESBIAN ACCENT! We can for sure pick it out of a crowd. Men tend to perceive it as a “tomboy” tone, but it’s not the same. We know the difference and can pick it out of a crowd

I think also, to play off your last point, many women, not just lesbians, will “masculinize” their voice/speech patterns to fit in more with a male dominated society whereas for the most part only gay men will “femininize” their voice/speech patterns. So even if a large percentage of lesbians have this more masculine speech it’s not specifically noticed as a lesbian accent because it appears in women of all sexualities and is not exclusive to just lesbian women the way the “gay accent” is to gay men.

While it's not mimicry of female speech, it definitely hints at being based on it. Women tend to be more liberal and safe for queer men historically

I'm a gay man that was raised by a deaf single mom in a queer vacuum. I have a heightened pitch but I don't know where I received it from.

lesbians tend to have deeper, raspier voices because we don't try to speak higher in the same way many gay men don't try to speak lower. we aren't trying to perform

As a lesbian, I fully believe that lesbians have an accent. However, we tend to code switch our accents when in interacting with strangers we don’t know are safe. I always speak in a higher pitched voice to strangers and avoid certain slang terms or phrases known mostly within the lesbian/queer community

Trust me, the gay accent is not learned. I grew up in the conservative Midwest. There were no gay men out, but I could tell who was gay just from their voice. I had to unlearn the gay accent just to fit in with friends and not be made fun of.

idk, I think a pretty major factor to this is that there isn't as much investment in scientific or historical research about women. Also personally, I can tell when someone who isn't a man speaks with traditionally masc traits. I'm not a lesbian (I think) but I've had people genuinely mistake me for a pre-pubescent boy based on my voice. And I've heard of many other women and afabs experiencing that to a more frequent degree. imo for having a deeper register or more "outward/relaxed" pronunciations.

Is it possible that gay males learn speech patterns from forming bonds with their female peers? Then as adults our speaking patterns would signal to women and each other that we aren't a threat?

As a queer nonbinary person woth over 20 years of exposure to lesbian voices of different generations as well as plenty of straight women’s voices, I always felt like my voice was my first queer tell and i can identify lesbians based on voice some of the time. And there are things straight and some bi women do which i never hear lesbian women do.

“Do I Sound Gay?” Is a great documentary on this. The conclusion there was gay men who spend more time around women and feel more comfortable around women. The subject of the documentary was straight but always told he sounded gay and he grew up with just a mom and sisters.

The framework of not noticing when someone who isn’t a man is speaking in a masculine masculine way because masculinity is the default can be applied to so many other phenomena because of structural racism, white supremecy, patriarchy. So interesting how our perceptions are so manipulated
