“Friends of God” (اَوْلِیَا awliyāh) is a concept within Islamic spirituality and mysticism that denotes sainthood. Sainthood in our religion is very divergent from the commonly associated notions prevalent in Christianity; that a righteous martyred Christian is canonized by a Church and later venerated and asked for intercession. Sainthood in Islam, however, entails a private and spiritually intimate relationship with God that often goes unnoticed by other Muslims due to the fear of praise and reverence; Mosques and Imams do not institutionalize their righteousness, nor are they asked for prayers after their passing. Sainthood in our religion refers to the Muslims who seek to purify their hearts (تَزْكِيَة tazkiyyāh) and embark on a journey of asceticism (زُهْد zuḥd) to reach the perfection of worship (إحسان iḥsān). They are always mindful of their Lord’s watchfulness, and hence dare not indulge in what displeases Him. “Worship Allāh as if you can see Him, for if you do not see Him, then He surely sees you.” [Shu’ab al-Imān 10060] Famous Muslim Saints are people like the Virgin Mary, for instance, who is described as screening herself from her people to strengthen her relationship with God [Maryam 19:16]. Many Orthodox Sufis refer to this passage when explaining the importance of seeking solace; the virtue of introversion, contemplation, and elongated periods dedicated solely to devotion. The purpose of our existence is our journey to God, and embodying these qualities ensures tranquility. Interestingly, sainthood is a category that every Muslim can reach if they put their mind do it. If we exhibit remarkable fortitude, faith, steadfastness, repentance, God-consciousness, reflection, prayer, supplication, knowledge, and pure love for our Creator—we can become saints. Indeed, this is the closest we arrive to reaching the grace of our Noble Prophets, may God bestow His peace and blessings upon them. Thus, if God tells us that we can become His friends, why do we then not try our absolute best to strive for that title? Is the fleeting sweetness of sin truly worthy of losing such a virtuous epithet? It was narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Among the servants of Allāh are some whom the prophets and martyrs will envy [because of their greatness].” It was said: “Who are they, O Messenger of Allāh, so that we may love them?” He ﷺ replied: “[…] They will not fear when the people fear, and they will not grieve when the people grieve.” Then he recited the words, “Unquestionably, [for] the allies [awliyāh] of Allāh, there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.” [Yunus 10:62] 📜 Narrated by Abi Dawūd. It was classed as Sahih by Shaykh Al-Albani رحمه الله in Al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 7/1369 #muslimah
