edward elric is a character i’ll carry within myself forever. he’s a powerful & beautiful symbol of the strength found in embracing and living within one’s humanity. he learns that a lesson without pain is meaningless, that every scar, every loss, is the price of something precious. his journey is the transformation of his soul, and what he ultimately forges is a heart.. a heart made fullmetal, unbreakable not because it cannot be hurt, but because it chooses to heal. edward’s story begins with grief.. from his and alphonse’s desperate attempt to resurrect their mother, to undo the cruelty of death with the science of alchemy. two young brothers, trembling before the truth of mortality, convinced that if alchemy could explain the world, it could surely mend it. but human transmutation always fails. to bring back life, one must offer something of equal value.. and there is nothing equivalent to a human soul. unbeknownst to them, that is the immutable law and truth of their world, and ed learns it at the cost of his arm, his leg, and his brother’s body. in time, he comes to understand that the very thing he tried to manipulate, the human soul, is beyond alchemy’s reach because it is what gives alchemy, and the world, its meaning. souls are what make humans capable of love, hope, and choice. they are what make us, us. they are what make the struggle worthwhile. and so, through his endless searching to restore his brother, edward finds what he was looking for - not in formulas or transmutation circles, but within himself, and within the people who stood beside him. during his final transmutation, standing before truth, the cosmic mirror of all things, ed gives his answer. to reclaim his brother’s body, he will relinquish the very power that once defined him. “you’re willing to cast it aside… to lower yourself to a simple human?” “what do you mean, lower myself? that’s the only thing i’ve ever been. just a simple human who couldn’t save a little girl, not even with alchemy.” “you’re sure you’ll be alright without it? think carefully now!” and with the voices of all those who redefined him - those he cherished, loved, and cared for, who gave him a purpose and a soul that alchemy never could - he answers, “who even needs alchemy, when i’ve got them?” “you’ve done it! that’s the right answer!” in that moment, edward proves that the greatest truth of his life was never written in alchemical symbols, but lived through his experience and connections. he rejects the illusion of godhood and accepts the grace of being human. he learns that wholeness was never something to be found beyond himself, but within; the act of embracing his mortality.. his love, his suffering - in the simple act of living. the boy who once sought to transcend his limitations ends up finding meaning and strength in them. the alchemist who lost everything in pursuit of endless knowledge & infinity gains it once again by surrendering the need to know & his ability to do so. everything we need is within us already. love, hope, the ability to grow, to learn - our humanity. it’s all there.
