@philosophyminis: The Golem Effect is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, where if you imagine somebody as being cruel, or mean, or bad, then their behaviour will meet your expectations. We will all rise or fall depending upon what others expect of us. In his 2019 book Humankind, Rutger Bregman argues that something similar is happening when we view ourselves as a species. Bregman argues that for centuries we've been telling ourselves a story where humans are the villains. Since at least Thomas Hobbes, there's been a narrative that human nature is cruel, egoistic, and violent. It's what Bregman calls the 'veneer theory,' where most people, given half a chance, will regress to a kind of brutish and selfish nature. But Bregman argues that almost all of the case studies and experiments people used to support this theory are, at best, far more nuanced, and at worst completely flawed. Almost all of our institutions – our schools, our prisons, and our workplaces – are built on the assumption that humans need to be watched at all times and need to be kept in control. The reason why this narrative is so tenacious is because fear, sensationalism, and misery make for great headlines, and they sell so well. And also, if you are the ones in power, then you want to justify your power by saying it's necessary. Bregman argues that humans are actually far more cooperative and altruistic if they're given half a chance. Sure, some people, some of the time, will be cruel, but Bregman argues that most people, most of the time, are good, honest, and kind.

The Capitalists try to invalidate Communism time and time again with ideas of 'human nature" being greedy and selfish, and to that extend they fund and support anything that agrees with them

are people inherently good? are people inherently bad? or a people just inherently people trying what they can in the moments they're faced with?

Based on my study of human nature and human condition I can agree with the above mention in the post that "human nature is cruel, egotistic and violent". What you all should ask yourselves is this: why is there a system of laws designed to prevent human nature expression in society? Its like saying: Humans, please stop being human, be another species.

Another problemnis that the cruel, bad and selfish tend to get into positions of power where they can impose their vision of society on the rest of us.

Is The Lord of The Flies still on the school syllabus? I think it shouldn’t be, since, as Bregman points out, when boys have actually been marooned on a small island, they’ve actually worked well together and been very supportive.

I’m by no means an expert, but I find it interesting to think about how our environment affects how likely we are to do good or bad. I like to compare the US and Finland (Finland being my home country, the US being a country I have lived in). Finns are more empathetic and caring when it comes to making sure that everyone’s doing okay and not just yourself. We have a lot of respect for each other (and when I say “respect”, I don’t mean the respect you talk about in the US where you gotta “respect your elders” and “respect authorities”, I am talking about a natural desire to show respect to every human and the nature we live in). On the other hand, there’s the US, which feels a lot more unsafe, where you can’t trust that the person next to you on the bus will help you if needed, and people in general don’t really have that foundational respect for each other. In Finland, you won’t find much litter on the ground, and you won’t find someone talking loudly on the bus, because we respect the people around us and want them to have a pleasant day. Now, I say all of this not to take a massive p00 on the US, but because it’s so fascinating and interesting to see how our environment shapes us and our values, empathy and the choices we make in our daily life.

Watching the media has a big part to play in this scenario. Good news doesn’t sell and is tacked onto the end of any reports! Even the notes / music the BBC news and app has inspires a sudden heart increase making you hyper vigilant on purpose.

Is this similar (direct opposite) to the pygmalion effect? To my knowledge, it’s not implemented in psychology syllabus’ because nobody has been able to scientifically prove it….but I kind of believe it

We literally killed and ate every other human species to extinction… do you honestly believe that people would be obeying laws if it wasn’t for the men with guns?

Too late. Too many people have already bought into that narrative so that they can justify their own SO behaviour.

The problem isn’t about what most people are like. It’s more the fact that even if most people most the time are kind some people some of the time are not and therefore we need mechanisms to stop these people.

the way the state is justified through the idea humans are in nature cruel violent and dangerous towards one another is unfathomably weird, you must wonder how that works when a state which itself is just a collective of humans can deem itself to be civil and righteous outside. this stuff is all BS a big contradiction in the center of all the reasons we declare states to be vital for human collectives. the only reason states can be seen as vital is because states organize the people under their rule so that their interests do not align and violence becomes a daily reality

This doubt is a result of large scale human civilisation and density. When there’s so many of us in such a small area, charged with anonymity too, the risk of being the victim in a crime increases. Fear drives the doubt.

There are many ci founders not mentioned here eg. the availability of resources, the more limited the resources the greater the incidence of negative behaviour, altruism is also linked to family and close community, the us v them. The most savage behaviour often occurring in limited resources with heterogeneous society. Antisocial and violent behaviour increases as wealth inequality increases, amongst th e poor, etc etc
