We wish Benfica good luck. It’s a team that has always been among the top 20 in the world. Qarabağ Ağdam, on the other hand, is a club that was fully founded in 1987. In 1993, Aghdam and other parts of Karabakh and East Zangezur were invaded by Armenian separatists. Even though the lands where Qarabağ’s stadium is located were liberated in 2020, the area had been completely leveled and devastated after nearly 30 years of war and occupation. Rebuilding takes time, and clearing landmines is still ongoing (Armenia has only provided about 25% of the maps for the mined areas). Because of this, Qarabağ continues to play its home games in Baku. Our squad’s total value is less than $30 million. For 99% of clubs from post-Soviet countries, simply participating in the Champions League would be a dream, yet, Qarabağ (a club with only around 40 years of history and no proper stadium) currently sits 10th in the league phase. Benfica is the first top-20 team we have beaten, and we are steadily getting used to competing against giants like them.
