@drbotyler: Chronic Fatigue is a key symptom of ADHD and I can firmly state that so many of us yearn for more good, quality sleep. It is the rare night when we are staying up late, depriving ourselves of sleep for the fun of it. #adhd #add #autism #audhd #revengebedtimeprocrastination
I was working out at night and doctors told me not to do that because it would keep me up. I ignored them and do it anyway and it definitely helps me fall asleep as opposed to keeping me up. I hate that so often, they get caught up in “should” instead of what is.

Wait wait so we’re using outdated terms like “suffer with ADHD” and then policing a useful term that DOES actually connect with a bunch of ADHD folks? Like I get the science behind your argument but there are people for which “revenge” is the exact descriptor

I love that capitalism has reframed something that is becuase of the lack of mental it causes as our fault.

It is BOTH. I savor my time that I dont have any obligations and I use it to untangle the insanity in my brain and soul.

there are many mechanisms that could cause someone to stay up late, intentionally or not, neurotypical or not. ADHD is not a monolith and no single mechanism describes all situations. You can't underestimate the possibility that neurodiverse people (esp. masked) -- who often suffer the conventions of time, work, and society with heightened awareness -- are also (if not more likely) to see their time and mortal energy being stolen from them and demand more of the day

I’d say I stay up late because that’s when the rest of the world (NTs) go to bed and stop putting their demands on me. It’s not because I don’t have time to decompress during “normal hours” but because I actually can’t fully switch off until I know it will be acceptable to decline any external demands/contact under the guise of it being “outside socially acceptable hours” and I can pretend I was asleep. Even if I have time to decompress at 7pm, I’m still on edge until 10pm in case any external demands/contact come through

I don’t think the term implies the intentionality you ascribe to it. Despite my ADHD, I actually almost never have difficulty getting to sleep once I go to bed (and leave my phone downstairs). So avoiding that or preparing for it doesn’t explain why making myself go to bed is so hard.

My go to is a movie that I’ve seen several times before but that I will watch still but can zone out when I get sleepy

chronic fatigue isn't a key symptom of adhd though. it's definitely common, but I'll dispute that it's key.

is this also true for autism, or is this another indicator they missed my ADHD during evaluation?

I have ADHD and I do DEFINITELY stay up later than I should knowing I'll feel it in the morning because I have a kid and once he's asleep is the only me time I get. Not being able to fall asleep once I'm actively trying is a completely different thing in my mind.

This is so accurate. I have to turn on a show I've seen at least 15 times or use nature sounds to distract myself enough to sleep. It works most of the time.

I've been given every bit of advice on how to get a common sleep schedule. I've gone from Benadryl to non-diphenhydramine sedative to melatonin and am now on trazadone (which helps stay asleep but not fall asleep.) My mother would tell me how hard it was to get me to sleep at night and how easily of sleep during the day as an infant. At this point I feel like I was just born to be a night person. I function best from noon to 4am.

For me, revenge time is very different from night dread! Revenge time is like "I was out for work until 11 so now I need to play an hour instead of go to bed", but what you're describing is more in-bed activity.
