You can also do this without cutting off the pants and just turn the excess up inside the leg with an invisible basting stitch for growing kids who tend to get taller but not wider. I used to do this for my skinny boy who seemed to stay the same waist size that would grow 2 to 4 inches taller without outgrowing his jeans.
