@amanda.grace225: FELV is apparently not talked about much and cat owners should be aware of what it is!! Feline leukemia is a complex disease and there is not enough research on it. It can cause a variety of cancers and most cats who have it die 1-3 years after being diagnosed or are put down because you are not supposed to keep them with FELV-negative cats because the other cat can die from it. Almost all pounds will not take cats with FELV either and you aren’t supposed to release them because other strays could get infected as well. Smokey was most likely given it from his mother at birth and has been living with it forever. We think he was dumped bc of his FELV. I have kept him and my other cat Gingy seperate until his vet appt and vaccinations for this reason but there is always a chance he could give it to her even separated completely but it is mostly transmitted through saliva!
