I taught 1st grade at a charter school for years and I will say suspensions like this are usually because the behavior is so disruptive it’s preventing the other kids from learning. As much as you want the best for Lennox, remember the other kids in his class have parents who want the best for them too, and clearly Lennox’s behavior is disrupting their learning environment. I would spend the time at home focusing on a lottttt of reflection. Come up with some good questions that help him understand what was wrong with his behavior, what he was feeling/why he acted this way, and what he can do differently next time. (You could even download chat gpt and have it create these discussion questions for you). Take the time to reflect with him to ensure he understands behavior expectations and he is prepared to do better next time. Practice identifying emotions and coping stretegies he can use next time those emotions arise. I would also highly advise finding a Dr or child psychologist near you and have an evaluation done. ADHD, giftedness, autism spectrum etc could help you AND the school (or future schools) help him learn the best way possible without disrupting their learning of his peers

He is giving the rest of his class the opportunity to learn, so give him consequences and teach him.

I feel the point of the suspension isn't to punish him, but to remove him from the environment in which he is interrupting.

I teach public school and this wouldn’t be tolerated there either. Better start parenting and fix this problem.

It’s time Momma take him out of that school and get your Baby evaluated. That school isn’t the environment for him. It’s our responsibility as parents to make sure your child gets the best education possible and it’s not there.

They are just creating a paper trail! No 5-year-old should be suspended that many times. Please try a different school. Maybe even an IEP so that a learning plan can be created for him. Try KIPP. I also still believe in the public school system. Keep fighting Mom you'll find the right fit for him.

Cartwheels in the classroom! I’ve been in education for twenty five years and I’ve never heard of or had a kid do a cartwheel in the classroom!

Register him at your local public school. He can go to kindergarten in PS.

They just want to inconvenience you by suspending him - so you get tired and take him elsewhere.

Success Academy does not = smart kids. As a NYC public school teacher he can go to any public school. Retest for gifted and talented but that is irrelevant. The behavior needs addressing. If you don't enroll in the gifted school by a certain date YOU give up your seat, acceptance letter tells you that.

These kids are very smart. Do you think he might be acting out because he knows he’ll get to go home and be with you? I’m not saying that’s what’s happening but maybe a possibility? 🤷🏼‍♀

You can have a very bright kiddo that also has special needs- his behavior could be just discipline, but it could be ADHD, autism, or other concerns. There is a lengthy process for schools to do an evaluation, but you can seek out referrals for an evaluation or therapy for beh. probs by talking to his pediatrician or seeing a clinical psychologist.

What’s he having for breakfast? Little boys have a lot of energy in the AM. It needs to be channeled before school. I recommend letting him do some sort of physical activity before school. He will be calmer

When my daughter started school, she wasn’t the easiest. She was very bright and tested in early, but wasn’t emotionally ready for school. There were a lot of difficult days and I didn’t know what to do from home to make changes in her school day. Now that I work in the school system, I have some ideas that might help you. If I were in your shoes, I would find out the typical schedule for the day. I would follow the schedule. During reading time I would work on reading skills. During math time I would math skills. I would expect my child to sit during that period of time and work quietly. Every time my child spoke or got up out of their seat I would calmly but coldly return them back to the work area. This is time to lead/work we don’t talk we dont play we sit in our seat. If you need worksheets, there’s tons of stuff on the Internet. During this time, I would not allow my child to have any kind of technology even if it meant that I didn’t get to watch TV for whatever number of days they were suspended. During recess, take them outside to the park. Play is important for children. Especially one doing cartwheels in the classroom. Spend the time that you would’ve spent on the iPad/watching tv reading books. Explained to the child that you expect them to listen to their teachers and that if they do not, there will be consequences like no technology. I would also say based upon the need to move physically and to not be able to control it your child may have something like ADHD and a trip to the pediatrician maybe beneficial. If you do receive a diagnosis like ADHD then you can get a 504 which can include things like movement breaks. We have students at my school that get extra time at recess or pulled out of the class to take a walk When the other kids are transitioning. Most teachers are good teachers and want the best for your child. Same with administrators. Lean into them as a resource. Form a team around your child so that they can be successful. If your teachers feel like you’re supporting them then they will go out of their way to support your kid. I see it all the time. Just as much as you need someone to listen when you say this This is a tough Good lu

From my understanding, Success Academy is very strict with discipline. I work in a charter school, and it's very strict. At this point, you need to teach discipline and explain the rules and expectations that he needs to learn. You have to figure out ways to help him recognize and correct his behavior. He is very smart, Mom. When suspended, it should be like school: routine, routine, routine! No entertainment; work after breakfast, work, lunch, work, and maybe one fun activity, like recess for 30 minutes, and work again. Reading or practice after dinner, bath, bed, repeat. You have to reinforce positive behavior and reprimand bad behavior. You got this, Mom!
