I genuinely believe that if more white people touched base with their heritage and cultural traditions, it would do so much to undo the white supremacist programming. give them something actually real and concrete to feel pride and a sense of belonging with

you can take it further, the erasure of cultural identifiers to assimilate into a larger American identity left a cultural vacuum that breeds white supremacy. If (like me on my mom's side) you have truly no idea where your family came from because its so far back, what you are left with is just White. And there's not much true White culture because we constructed it specifically as an imposition of priviledge over others. What you're left with is lonely and isolating, pushing people to seek meaning in their Whiteness

I’m Irish but native Irish people get sooooooo mad when I say that I am 😭 they always say I can’t be Irish cause I’m American. Like my grandparents were born in Ireland but ok 😭😭

i do think that kind of behavior has always been a (albeit somewhat clumsy) attempt to reconnect with a culture outside of White American

been saying this for years, the only way white supremacy will end is when american whites start to learn and reclaim their ethnic culture and heritage

I sorta agree, because then it forces you to confront how/when your ancestors came to this continent, rather than just accepting a nebulous "white american" identity and consuming colonialist mythology

You’re 100% correct. I recently got into the 23andme subreddit (I know I’m weird) and whenever people pop up with like 99% northwest European they are like “omg I’m so boring” and the comments are full of people saying “every genetic history is unique and beautiful!” “Full 100%s are rare” “yt supremacy makes you believe white is boring because it’s seen as the standard/status who” and it’s really changed the way I approach this conversation now

Yep! We need to stop seeing whiteness as the default/as a lack of ethic ancestry. A lot of us are very mixed in our ancestry, and some times it kinda sucks because you want to connect with your heritage and you’re just like… shit I’m a mutt. But honestly, even if you’re only like 15% of any given group, that’s still where you came from, you can still value it and connect with it regardless of what others tell you.

Just labelling yourself as “white” will expand whiteness, especially when you’re already on the boundary of whiteness. I’ll always say I’m ukrainian and armenian since I’d rather not subsume my culture and history into white American-ness just to gain brownie points from racists

yeah i know no one really wants to talk about this, but the assimilation into a blob of whiteness and the lost cultures and practices of precolonial ancestry, lost heritage and identity, spirituality etc is so lonely. and i know non white people can relate to that due to genocides and slavery etc. so many of us feel lost on the land we happen to be on. and like we’re missing a part of us. there’s a lot of ancestral grief amongst white peoples that i feel like most people aren’t even aware of or curious about. and i get it. but i let myself feel it and try to connect to what i can.

I also think about the general push back from Europeans w this and how ppl r kind of guilted back into “just white American” when they do try to reconnect. They’re pushed by the very group they come from. Which would stunt that move away from Whiteness I think

I understand the point of doing that, but I also just am not grasping it. I cannot really point at anything that ties me to any European countries, sure I could look at ancestry but that’s not really a thing with influence. I don’t feel connected to Germany or Scotland anymore than any other person living in the US does, so it seems odd to identify with those countries. Open to ideas here.

not really though? listing your distant heritage as an american white person does nothing to deconstruct whiteness as power or just bc it becomes a *specific* sort of whiteness doesnt mean its effects as a position of violence are more neutralized

I feel like it’s hard for a lot of white Americans to get in touch with cultural roots because we are very shunned by Europe, like they wouldn’t let us get away with saying we are like them. And so it pushes the white identity even further
