@dacoscyth.v2: The anarchist movement in Ukraine, known as the Makhnovshchina, emerged during the Russian Civil War. It was a mass peasant-based struggle that aimed to build a society free from state power, landlords, and centralized authority. At its core, the movement sought to create a stateless federation of self-managed communities. In the territories under its influence, land was expropriated from landlords and redistributed to peasants, who organized themselves into free communes. Factories and workshops were placed under the control of workers’ councils. Decision-making rested in local assemblies and soviets, which operated on principles of direct democracy and voluntary cooperation, without a ruling party or government. Militarily, the movement organized the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine, often called the Black Army. It defended the communes against various forces — foreign occupiers, counterrevolutionary armies, and later the Bolsheviks — while maintaining an internal structure based on elected officers and collective decision-making. The Makhnovist movement represented an attempt to turn anarchist principles into social reality.
