I normally let medical students do their work cu they have to learn somehow. BUT the 1 time I regretted this, it wasn’t the student that messed up, but the teacher!!! 4th kid, in labour for a while and wanted epidural. Anaesthesiologist came with his student, asked if it was ok to teach. Sure, ok (as long as I got the epidural). He started and shoved that needle in my back going back and forth saying: “this is too deep, this is not deep enough, have to aim for here, but blah blah”. I got a contraction and tried to be still, but it hurt and he was fiddling with that needle in my back. The a-hole then told me off for moving 😡. Fine, he finished. But guess what… it didn’t work! The midwives noticed it too and I kept my gas and air. The asked for the anaesthesiologist to come back, but it was change of shift so had to wait a bit and the new one came in. Sneakers, gold watch, you know the type. He checked my back and said it’s all good, there’s nothing wrong. I was in agony. Keep in mind, this is my 4th kid! I’ve given birth with and without epidural before, I know the difference. Then the guy said to the nurse to take away my gas and air. I said I was in pain and he replied “that’s not pain you’re feeling, it’s pressure”. I deadpanned and said to him: “there’s a reason why men weren’t allowed in labour rooms, now get out!!” So yeah… I won’t blame students for messing up if that’s what they are being taught: to blame when patient is in pain, to not set an epidural right and to gaslight them!
