In America, the Math Curriculum covers too many operations early on. Adjust it for development. Allow more concrete modes of learning longer for sets of students who struggle.

I get what you’re saying but at the same time when you have a Year 6 kid working at a Year 2 level for maths, you can’t just hold them back for for a few years. They will never catch up to were they need to it. It’s better to have a full time teacher aid in the classroom as making one change in the education system

Heard this refered to as the "Swiss Cheese" model. Students are exposed to topics but aren't actually Mastering the concepts.

Or, you could give a daily review of the topic not clearly understood while you move on inthe explicit with another topic. So many can also be integrated in projects etc. IEPs will also pick up particular areas of concern, and working Imin the topic in the next semester or through Mathletics or essential assessment. Many ways to support student learning without pausing on everything but the one topic.

You don’t need to hold kids back because the curriculum is spiralling? They are in fact, exposed to those concepts again. Children don’t need the shame of repeating a year level, they need targeted interventions in and out of classrooms. All respect to education support staff, we need them in every room, but the intervention support needs to come from highly trained teachers and speechies.

I think that lower primary grades NEED a teacher’s aide (in addition to any aides who are there to work with specific kids). Even very capable little kids have a limited capacity to work independently, particularly while their reading skills are still developing. I can differentiate like a maestro and see genuine learning growth in kiddos of all ability levels when I have a second adult in the room to support groups of students alongside me. And if I can plug or prevent learning gaps when a kid is 7, then hopefully there are fewer problems for the teachers working with these same kids when they’re 10.

Bring back streaming and allow for class changes based on academic success in various areas.

Evidence says that would be a poor solution to a so-called problem. . . Best solution might be to adopt a better model for education, rather than the current system based on a factory / military model.

High school is just as bad - we dragggggg kids through so much! They should also be not going through to high grades.

After seeing my daughter struggle in public schools from this, I sent my kids to charter school and they put kids in classes based on their levels. My son was working ahead of his grade level and my daughter was working at her below grade level while they incorporated real life ways to teach, like recipe measuring for fractions. Outside the box teaching was better for her.

Yep. We move them and teach them at grade level without letting them learn the basics.

Exactly! We don't need grade levels! we need mastery of skills!

I agree, but most states have guidelines in place where we cannot hold kids back that needs to be changed at the state level

I fully agree! I have 9th graders who can’t spell CVC words who should have never made it this far through being that far behind

My problem is that they spend so much time on learning for standardized tests that they are not learning enough of the basics.

I agree in theory, but research says retention doesn’t work. I would wave a magic wand to have something other than retention that works

My change would be to reduce the volume of curriculum we need to cover and focus 90% on skills. Kids can get content from google, let’s just do skills alone.

I think all classes need to be graded. And not just English and Maths - we have PE classes with state footballers in the same class as students who don’t want to break a nail, and art classes with serious artists in the same class as boys who draw stick figures and penises. Teachers cannot effectively teach such a wide range of abilities. Plus kids are falling behind in year 3 maths and can never catch up because the topics get harder but they haven’t grasped the previous topics.
