@_jennasayquoi: Catherine Clinton writes, “the southern lady was a symbol of gentility and refinement for plantation culture, designed to fill the requisites of chauvinist stereotype by embracing those qualities slaveowners wished to promote, even though the practical needs of plantation life cast her in quite a different role. The clash of myth and reality was monumental.” #historytok #History #victorian #antebellum #USHistory
This literally sounds like trad moms. especially ones who married really young and had no higher education or work experience. Theyre stuck at home with lots of kids and a home to manage and many fear the outside world and buy in to the idea that there is danger everywhere. they have little support if they leave their husbands and no back up plan

So basically a woman was brainwashed from birth and had no chance to go outside/get educated or influenced enough to start doubting slavery? Please excuse me if I'm wrong, I'm not American, I just love your channel

They Were Her Property… please read!!! Please don’t paint these women as victims. They had alot of power and were most times the masterminds behind the abuse.

So, when you mentioned women not going to the Methodist classes. (I realize that’s not the point of the video), But this brought back some memories. I grew up Methodists, but in the south. I can’t tell even tell you how many times I heard I wasn’t a real Christian because I was Methodist. Is this kind of where it started?

People don't seem to understand that even a wealthy woman who lived in a mansion STILL had the full time job of managing the staff and running the home. Being a manager is a job, and all these trad wives don't seem to realize this when they talk about wanting to "return to the old times"

The amount of work men have put into trying to keep women down. Let us not forget ladies, they are afraid of us. If they weren’t, they’d not be concerned.

I love the work you do on this. As a woman whose roots grow deep in Georgia red clay (family has been here since it was a colony), I’m ashamed of my heritage and work to define our history accurately. This helps so very much. Thank you.

This is why it’s important for people with privilege to acknowledge and use it. It’s trickle down dehumanization- the patriarchy deputized white women by isolating them in these golden cages and training them to understand their lives were in service of their white men. In turn, they took out their anger and trauma and boredom on the people they kept enslaved who were the only people she had power over.

I just feel like people need to remember that the plantation owners, wives and daughters really had no more control than the slaves. I mean sometimes the plantation owner gave their wives and children a little bit more leeway (though some did the same for their slaves) but as far as the law was concerned, the wives and daughters were property as well with no real control over their lives other than what their father or husband decided to give them
