Why Salary History Bans? Due to longstanding inequities in pay for men and women in the labor force, reliance on an employee’s prior salary to set current pay, can exacerbate pay disparities for any worker who has faced discrimination in the labor market by anchoring pay to past wages. Using salary history to determine pay contributes to and reinforces the persistent gender wage gap at every job transition for working women, and particularly women of color, over the course of their working lives, including by affecting women’s subsequent raises, bonuses, and retirement savings. Implementing equal pay protections, including salary history bans, can help to close the gender wage gap by breaking the cycle of pay inequity. Some states have made it illegal to ask you about your current pay but to make it more confusing some cities have passed these laws but not the state. For example, I live in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania does NOT have a statewide salary history ban but the city where I live and work does. In Philadelphia we cannot ask job seekers what they are making.   Here is an overview of the 22 states that have salary history bans in effect.             •           Alabama             •           California             •           Colorado             •           Connecticut             •           Delaware             •           D.C.             •           Georgia             •           Hawaii             •           Illinois             •           Kentucky             •           Louisiana             •           Maine             •           Maryland             •           Massachusetts             •           Mississippi             •           Missouri             •           New Jersey             •           New York             •           Nevada             •           North Carolina             •           Ohio             •           Oregon             •           Pennsylvania             •           Puerto Rico             •           Rhode Island             •           South Carolina             •           Utah             •           Vermont             •           Virginia             •           Washington   #salarytransparency #Salaryhistoryban #HRtips #jobinterivew #Salarynegotion #howtoanwerinterviewquestions #jobsearchtips #equalpay #paytransparency #negotiatesalary #money #getanewjob @Salary Transparent Street
