I wanted one the first time I heard it many years ago. I finally got round to buying one. These are one of the most eerie strange but wonderful instruments I’ve ever come across. It’s called a WaterPhone, or AquaPhone… Invented in the late 1960s by Richard Waters, the Waterphone is a unique acoustic instrument made of a stainless steel resonator bowl with rods of different lengths and diameters. It can be played with a bow, tapped, or resonated by adding water inside the chamber, which shifts the pitch and creates haunting, otherworldly sounds. The Waterphone is often used in film soundtracks, theatre, meditation, and sound healing because of its eerie, mystical tones. You’ve probably heard it in horror or sci-fi movies without even realising. It bridges music, art, and science, producing sounds that feel both ancient and futuristic.
