These places only looked peaceful and advanced because the footage shows the lives of the privileged few, not the reality for the majority. Rhodesia was a white-minority regime built on the oppression of millions of Black Africans. Apartheid South Africa forced Black people into poverty, segregation, and violent control. The British Raj exploited India, caused famines, and treated Indians like second-class citizens in their own land. The roads, electricity, and “order” people glorify were built on deep inequality, suffering, and colonial control. Just because something looks “better” in old footage doesn’t mean it was good or just.
