She was abandoned by her three adult children, Víctor Manuel Rivas Mundo, Marina Guadalupe Rivas Mundo, and Alma Rivas Mundo, who had lost contact with her years prior. Despite authorities offering her shelter and support, María declined to leave the bus station, holding on to hope that her family would come back. She survived with the help of kindness from passersby and was often seen carrying her belongings in plastic bags, using a walking cane, and wearing a lilac hoodie and crocs.
