What would you prefer to call it? Orthogonal numbers perhaps?

Imaginary and negative numbers don’t exist. They’re just terms.

All numbers are “imaginary” when you think of it but I agree it’s misleading to use that word. Numbers are abstract representations with some useful purpose

Sounds like an engineer trying to give the mathematician perspective. i = square root of -1 makes excellent and intuitive sense to a mathematician.

Real numbers = blue numbers. Imaginary numbers = red numbers. Complex numbers = purple numbers. See? Less scary.

No, the quantity they represent does not exist , so they are imaginary

This is just plain wrong. After all, if i=90 degrees, then isn’t it the case that 2*i = 180 degrees? Nonsense.

Ooops: sq root (-1) is not only i, but ALSO -i.

I had high hopes. I stopped loving math when I was introduced to i can use it but it fundamentally upset me.

Negatives equates to a debt. You have none and you owe something out.

Okay, but i = sqrt(-1) is very much a true identity, so I wouldn't put an "X" next to it. I might say it's an "identity" and not "the definition".

💯 love this! i'm a philosopher not a mathematician. But my philosophical take is that all ideas come into existence binary and turns to spectral. Square root of negative one as a matter of mathematical philosophy indicates negative and positive are not purely binary but can be a spectrum, in this area of mathematical conceptualization is in its infancy.

The square root of negative one is half negative 1. Half negative * half negative = - you can add half negatives together
