@rifitbsa.54: The goddess Oohirume, better known as Amaterasu Omikami, is one of the most important deities in Japanese mythology. She is the sun goddess and the supreme ruler of Takamagahara (the high heavenly plain), the abode of the gods. Her name, Oohirume, means "great maiden of the day." Origins​: According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, two of Japan's oldest historical and mythological texts, Amaterasu was born from the left eye of the god Izanagi while he was performing a cleansing ritual after returning from Yomi (the underworld). From his right eye was born the moon god Tsukuyomi, and from his nose was born the god of wind and storms, Susanoo. These three deities are known as the "San-shin" or "three noble gods." Famous Stories: Amaterasu and the Sky Cave​ The most famous story about Amaterasu is her hiding place in Amano-Iwato (Sky Rock Cave). This happened because her mischievous brother, Susanoo, destroyed Amaterasu's rice paddies and threw a skinned sacred horse into her weaving room. Angry and sad, Amaterasu locked herself in the cave, plunging the world into darkness.​The other gods and goddesses despaired at the darkness enveloping the earth. Finally, they devised a plan to free her. The goddess Ame-no-Uzume, the goddess of pleasure and dance, began a playful and erotic dance in front of the cave. This dance elicited joyful laughter from the other gods.​Intrigued by the sound of laughter, Amaterasu slightly opened the cave door. The gods then placed a sacred mirror (Yata no Kagami) in front of the cave door. When Amaterasu saw her reflection, she emerged from the cave, and the gods quickly pulled her out and sealed the cave shut. The sunlight illuminates the world again. Symbols and Influence​: Amaterasu is a symbol of light, life, and purity. She is also considered the ancestor of the Japanese Imperial Family.
