I think this is part of a larger anti-revolutionary slant in media. Elves were becoming too radical and sympathetic, so they had to be written as villains to temper that extremism. Also, both groups can be indigenous at once, and I’m not sure how I feel about one group being “more” indigenous than the other, or canceling the other group out, especially based on new lore., when elves have held that coding in important ways for the fandom over four games.

I think any coding found in dragon age at all is inherently meaningless and contradictory. I do not think there is any intentional coding whatsoever in either of these groups at this point. Regardless, I don’t think any accidental coding in one detracts from the same in another.

Certain modern elves seemingly have a narrative of Indigeneity - Seheron and the elves in Alienages or also Tevinter elves- but I also have literally no authority on the topic. I do find it kind of odd that the Avvar, Chasind, Seheron, and Alienage or Tevinter elves get glossed over a lot in favor of “let’s explain minutiae of lore again! 😀”

that's why I always choose anger, and why I can't bear to send Harding as mission leader on the island. I can't do that to the dwarves.

I so wanted us to get more dwarven info and interactions in Veilguard. Replaying origins highlighted how deep their history is and it did feel a little pushed to the side for the Ancient Elf show

No matter how better the writing may be, I just can't turn down Harding's Inquisition armor from choosing compassion over the rock muscle armor anger gets you.

I think that I take DA with the thought of everything is true depending on perspective, and those clashing ideas co-exist in my head because i accept that more then one thing can be true. DA is weird lore wise. The more I learn the more weird it gets.

i think this might track if the modern elves were the descendants of the evanuris but theyre descendants of their slaves, which is why the whole rewrite of having an elven rook like... apologize to harding for what the evanuris did is wild to me. they are victims of the same ppl and are being positioned oppositionally

the issue I have with this take is because I strongly identified with the elves via how often my indigenous identity is often debated time and time again despite "recognition" in my country's law as being so, because it plays a lot into the colonial politics and how i do have indonesian heritage that's a result of people just going around doing things and then just joined a community and continued life wherever they set foot as part of those people that are still carried over today. but also that where I'm from, spirits also make up indigenous landscape as part of the land AND the people which isn't just limited to spiritual beliefs because they are also cause-and-effect to a lot of things that just occur like natural phenomena (and yes with recognition that these spirits/otherworldly beings are capable of doing great harm hence why they are often used in oral history as moral lessons), therefore the elves to me are still indigenous with a lot of difficult history to reconcile and rehash especially when i recognized it myself but it doesn't really remove them from the identity as a whole.

my wife and I where talking about this, that Veilguard made the Dwarves so close to the Ingenious peoples. Like the basically worshiped the land and they had it taken from them and severed from the land itself.

I think both things can be true at the same time. Harding’s quest is relevant to indigenous people too, but that doesn’t negate all the other clear indigenous things baked into the elves over the 4 games. As Haudenosaunee I grew up with stories of my great grandparents going to residential schools and having our language and culture beaten out of us, hearing about our land being stolen, and atrocities like the Sullivan campaign. That part isn’t new to me. My whole life has been focused on the effort of trying to learn and connect and revitalize and build community with and around my culture and my language.
