@globalelephants: For about 40 years at Ecoparque Mendoza, Kenya could only reach for trees outside her enclosure. 🌳 Now, at sanctuary, she’s surrounded by them—free to forage, snack, and enjoy as she pleases. A life once out of reach is finally hers. Unfortunately, it’s common for elephants in captivity to have no access to living grass and trees. The small enclosures can’t support enough vegetation for the elephants to be able to browse and graze. If you look close, you’ll sometimes notice that facilities will fence off decorative trees and greenery so that the elephants can not reach and eat them. We’ve mentioned before about the meditative way that the sanctuary elephants will snack on grass, brush, and trees. They spend most of their time relaxing and munching. In the wild, elephants spend up to 18 hours per day grazing.
