A deadly tornado that killed three people in Enderlin, North Dakota, on June 20 was a rare EF-5 storm, the National Weather Service (NWS) announced on October 5. The last known EF-5 tornado in the US was recorded in 2013. Video from Eric Schultz shows the massive tornado towering above houses and silos as a siren rings out. “I was looking to the northeast out my front door. I thought the lightning was extreme and the cloud like formation was very unique. I did not know the extent of the storm yet,” Schultz told Storyful. Though the NWS’s preliminary survey rated the tornado as an EF-3+ – the first in the area in 15 years – it was upgraded to an EF-5 on October 5. In the announcement, the NWS in Grand Forks said it had “conducted additional surveys and worked extensively with wind-damage experts” to further investigate the twister. They estimated the maximum wind speed at greater than 210 mph after examining a train derailment south of Enderlin in which one empty tanker car was “tossed about 475.7 feet (145 m).”
