Because of gastroparesis (stomach paralysis), my digestive system doesn’t function. I can’t tolerate food, water, or even small sips of liquids without nausea, bloating, or extreme pain. I can’t drink water to hydrate. I can’t snack when I’m hungry. I can’t fuel myself the way most people do. So instead, I rely on TPN — a custom formula made in a lab based on weekly bloodwork drawn by my home health nurse. It contains all of my calories, fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients, and is delivered directly into my bloodstream through a central line. This is how I survive. This is my normal.
