So do you believe that the police should act like firefighters and just stay off the road until they get a call for service? Only have then respond to complaints and not be out there actively looking for dangerous and drinking drivers?

Traffic stops are not “small” things. It’s a normalized interaction with police that can easily escalate. Ask any marginalized person. Your rights can easily be violated, and your life can be at risk. Exercise your right to remain silent in any police interaction.

3 questions. 1) What happens if police lie to you? 2) What happens if YOU lie to the police? 3) What happens if the police say you said or did something, but you did not? Silence is your only protection absence of dashcam

I’m happy they set up sobriety check points. “Trap” away! Let’s get the drunks off the road. I’m telling them I’ve had nothing to drink and I’m picking up my kid, so my stop is quick, and they can catch the people who are going to hurt other people on the roads.

A *good* police officer will understand you are exercising your rights. A *bad* cop is more likely to feel undermined and ego-bruised. You talk about how we're socialized to perceive police, and rolling into a trap believing it's being run by good-natured and understanding police officers is the same problem. I agree with your premise, but say nothing is unwise. I believe it to be better to politely say a little that answers nothing. "I'm sorry sir, but my lawyer has told me not to answer questions like that." etc.

I was stopped about a month ago for distracted driving in Ontario. The officer asked about my firefighter plates on my vehicle. We had a conversation about where I was a firefighter for and if I was active duty or not. (Which I am not) he then told me they were supposed to have zero tolerance for distracted driving but since I was honest and “decent” with him I would just be getting a warning. I honestly believe if I followed up his question with I don’t talk to police or I am remaining silent. I would have walked away with a $600+ ticket, 6 demerit points and a 3 day license suspension

They are on your side. Blaming police for investigating people’s bad decisions doesn’t make them your enemy

You don’t have to answer. It’s not legally required. You can remain silent as is your prerogative. This also applies in our own personal relationships. Try it with your mate. Tell us how it works out. 👍

In the 1970s, a friend of mine was stopped by police after going the wrong way in a one way street. The officer said, "Where have you been tonight and whatever you say, don't say that you have been drinking". My friend assured him he had not been and the officer told him to go straight home. I guess people think they are still in those innocent times.

Sure they set up a “trap” as you say but on the other hand they are catching drunk drivers — the only issue is if it is a false positive and honestly how often does that occur?

Imagine looking at life through this perspective. What do you think the police are ACTUALLY doing when you go through a road block? I’m thankful for every single police officer doing their job and keeping us safe

Police have discretion when issuing tickets. You just get a summons and suspension each time you are pulled over.

I had a client stopped for swiping their mounted phone (distracted driving). Driver had to get license in backseat so got out of the car, went to backseat and almost immediately brought out his wallet. Officer asked him how much he had to drink. He looked confused and got back in his car. Officer demanded an answer and asked more questions related to alcohol- where you coming from, do they serve liquor there? The driver blew 0mg on the breathalyzer. I watched the bodycam, Officer had NO reason to do all that. Driver was steady in his feet, moving with purpose and focus, answered questions politely and straight. It doesn't help the distracted driving but literally why did the Officer need to do all that? If the driver didn't have to answer the questions and the officer demanded answers and gave no caution at all. 😩

So you just say in a pleasant tone; hi, I'm not answering questions, and then provide you driver licence and stuff right?

with respect, all your experience is in dealing with people who are in court. the advice your giving is correct for people who end up in court. it's not the best for people trying to avoid more police attention than they would otherwise get. the vast majority of people interacting with police do not end up in court.

The tell here is "That's why they let me go" as if they're not arrested because they were polite and not the fact that he hadn't committed a crime to be arrested for!

Not answering questions sure. But at least be kind “do I have to answer those specific questions?” Straight up silent treatment, that’s going to raise some flags.
