I think it comes down to having a well thought out opinion, as opposed to a reflexive or “aura” based opinion. I had a whole argument with my 15 yo brother in law about why anakin is his favorite character because he has aura. Not because of his abilities or redemption, not because of his actions in the clone wars, but because he looked badass when he led the 501st up the stars to the Jedi temple. Which obviously is problematic

The thing I’ve noticed is a lot of the OG anime watchers view on specific anime is stained by nostalgia. Like the recommendations for One Piece. It sounds like a great show if you are up to date with it, but I could only make it through like 6 episodes before I gave up.
