Their mothers always cared because they knew the fate awaiting their little girls. They were just powerless to stop the cycle that continues to this day.

I remember seeing that greek letter from a mother begging her son in law to be present while her daughter gives birth for the first time and being blown away

The one that gets me the most is the Memorial Tablet for Vitalis from between 50–150 CE—a small headstone put up by a little girl’s parents that says, ‘To the gods of the shades, her loving parents erect this memorial to their daughter, Vitalis, who lived for eight years, eleven months and three days.’ She’s depicted on the stone as the goddess Diana with a little bow and her hunting dogs, which was a common motif for young girls’ funerary motifs, during a period when children were valued by their families so much.

Even now the disparity between how people treat potential son in laws vs daughter in laws is insane. DILs will get iced out for breathing too loudly. Meanwhile it seems the only time people trash SILs is on Dateline when he literally ended their daughter’s life

The Story of Persephones was written for the comfort of the mothers because Persephones was able to return which their own never could.

the idea that parents didn’t care about their children before the 20th century is propaganda

I cannot conceive of a world I would not burn for her sake. I cannot imagine a time or place I would not shake to its foundations for her. Tremble and her beauty and quake at her father’s rage for it is born of love.

For one of my classes we read a study on Herculaneum remains and I kept thinking about your posts and that they were all people once.

they did love the daughters thats why they put then in gold rings or silver earrings, a bit of money of your own just in case. gave them cast iron, taught them how to downplay arguments, taught them a lot of repression to keep your image so you won't be cast out. caused a lot of issues but they had only what they had to work with

Only in patriarchy based communities and in ancient times matriarchal societies still thrived.

I’m sure “restitution” has a different root word but I have a brief little fantasy that they did something so scorched earth it transcended language to hit English there

At its core, the myth of Persephone and Demeter is about a mother fighting tooth and nail to retain access to her daughter after she is married off. 🥲 Mothers were always willing to burn it all down if it meant they got to see their baby girl.
