When my wife and I first got married, I wanted to be very structured with the rules we had in the household. The problem was that we had such different personalities and ways of handling things around the house. This caused resentment. We started to believe that we weren’t doing things around the house, or doing them wrong, out of spite for the other person. But that wasn’t the case—it was simply that we had different ways of going about things. Eventually, we started approaching it like this: if something needs to get done, the person available to do it, does it. Naturally, there are going to be things that one person does more often, or maybe does better, but at the end of the day, someone gets it done. If one person’s schedule gets busier, or more starts falling on one person, we communicate and figure it out. I think operating this way and having this mentality definitely reduces the chances of resentment and arguments within the household.
