@parmtalksplots: This was such a heavy and vulnerable scene. Both Lola Tung and Chris Briney delivered amazing performances 👏🏾 Do you agree with my thoughts here, or do you have another theory of what Belly may have been thinking? Belly's fears go all the way back to Conrad asking her to the Deb Ball. When she found out Susanna told him to ask her she was devastated and really never trusted her and Conrad's feelings after that.

I definitely took it as she was still questioning his love for her since she was so convinced he never loved her as much as she loved him

So, maybe the problem was in fact Susanna. “So many promises were made” So many people affected by this miss understandings. At a very young age. Adult world adult expectations versus adolescence growth.

I saw so many people say that they thought what belly said in this scene didn't make any sense, but I understood her right away

Also I love that he spent the episode drinking her in. He literally wanted to know the ins and outs of how she lives now. Even with the prospect of having a boyfriend he still wanted to know her. So beautiful

I think the promise conversation could also be tied to Belly’s promise to Susannah to look after Conrad. I think Belly would think that she broke her promise because Conrad was left alone by Belly and she could regret that. Conrad may not know what Susannah had made her promise but in many ways he is liberating her from the ghost of Susannah.

I think this is a beautiful explanation I don’t understand what she was going to do or how it was going to pan out if Conrad didn’t say your stuck with me forever now! Or whether it would have always gone this way? Up to this point they were both clearly into each other still. Maybe up to this point she was in control but the realisation brought her crashing down.

I thought the “I’m not as sure as you” was either what you said - or I also interpreted as her last ditch effort to give him an out and hide from her feelings. The shock for her is the fact that he has asserted his feelings again and again and refuses to back down on them. It’s real, and she’s just starting to fully understand him for the first time. I think that’s why there was such an immediate “what am I doing?!” When she saw the baby pic of herself! This was a great analysis!!!!

I actually took “I wish that I could be as sure as you” different than others and yourself. I thought she meant that she wishes she could be sure that SHE loved him still apart from her grief. That’s why it was so important for her to say to him what she said on the train. This scene is so important in letting Conrad bare his soul and convince her that she loves him and I think by the end of this scene she feels that. But she hadn’t yet finished accepting that her love for him had nothing to do with her grief. She specifically says “would it loom so large for US?” You can’t convince someone into loving themselves enough to accept love they don’t think they deserve. Belly had to do that herself and she did. “I choose you of my own free will.”❤

I feel like the motif with Belly memorizing and Conrad remembering is really highlighted here too!! Belly has everything Conrad’s said to her etched in her brain—not his actions. And Conrad couldn’t see her insecurities the ways she felt them, inside and buried deep down

The talk about holding yo promises, I think refers to the promises Conrad & Jere made to their mom thinking that it’s probable Belly did too and trying to release her from that and any guilt associated with it.

Unladylike Me & Co :
Everything belly said was a projection from her relationship with Jeremiah because everything she said that she was afraid of was everything she went through with Jeremiah he only noticed her the summer She got pretty, Jeremiah tied her with his mom when he was crying telling Belly he needed her because of his mom so Belly felt guilty and was like OK I’m here now. I’ll never leave you again that cemented their relationship, but it was based on his mom not Jeremiah being in love with Belly so everything she was sitting there telling Conrad she was projecting on Conrad because she knew that, that was her and Jeremiah‘s relationship was based on and she wanted to make sure that if she moved forward with Conrad that it wouldn’t be based on that but she just couldn’t believe it because she had gone down that past with Jeremiah

Just random thoughts here… It’s interesting thinking about that conversation and her misconceptions and it’s why junior mint was so important as it was the first time Conrad asked her to the boardwalk just them so that was the first time you can see Conrad had already developed feelings for her and we only know through Conrad’s letter in the book where he knew she always looked at the bear and spent like $40 to win it for her but belly and her insecurities thought Conrad only went for the girl at that stand

I also think Conrad was holding himself back from his feelings for belly because he made the promise to his mom he would take care of Jeremiah and look after him. I think he was referring to that promise when he said that to belly and was ready to put himself first.
