Riya shows a sincere concern for the purity of your faith. Riya (showing off) is a subtle and dangerous spiritual disease, which the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) called "minor shirk" (Shirk al-Asghar) and said he feared for his followers more than the Dajjal (antichrist) because of how hidden it can be. Riya is the act of performing any act of worship (like prayer, charity, or seeking knowledge) with the intention of being seen or praised by other people, rather than purely for the sake of Allah. Refraining from it is a lifelong struggle that requires constant self-awareness and seeking Allah's help. This struggle is at the heart of cultivating Ikhlas (sincerity). Here are practical steps, based on the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ), to help you refrain from Riya. 1. The Most Important Dua for Protection The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a specific supplication to protect against shirk, both major and minor. Make it a habit to recite this regularly: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ Transliteration: Allahumma \ inni \ a'udhu \ bika \ an \ ushrika \ bika \ wa \ ana \ a'lam, \ wa \ astaghfiruka \ lima \ la \ a'lam. Translation: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which I do unknowingly." Reciting this with sincerity is your first and most powerful defense. 2. Practical Steps to Build Sincerity (Ikhlas) Before You Do a Good Deed: Check Your Intention (Niyyah): Before any act, pause and ask yourself: "Who am I doing this for?" Is it for Allah, or is it to impress someone, gain a reputation, or avoid criticism? Renew Your Intention: Explicitly renew your intention that this act is "for Allah alone." If you are posting a beneficial reminder online, for example, make the intention: "O Allah, I am doing this so that others may benefit and for You to reward me, not for 'likes' or praise." During the Good Deed: Fight the Whispers: If you are praying and a thought like "The person next to me must be impressed with my recitation" enters your mind, immediately recognize it as a whisper from Shaytan. Refocus on Allah: Remind yourself that Allah is watching you. His acceptance is the only one that matters. The praise of people is worthless and will not help you in the grave or on the Day of Judgment. Do Not Stop the Deed: A common trap of Shaytan is to make you stop doing a good deed by whispering, "You are just showing off!" The scholars advise that if your original intention was for Allah, you should continue the deed and fight the whisper, rather than abandoning the good act altogether. After You Do a Good Deed: Perform "Secret" Deeds: The best way to train your soul to be sincere is to perform acts of worship that no one else knows about. Give charity in secret. Pray extra voluntary prayers (like Sunnah or Tahajjud) at night when you are alone. Fast voluntary fasts without telling anyone. Read Qur'an or make dhikr (remembrance of Allah) when you are by yourself. Balance Public and Private: For every good deed you do in public (like praying in the mosque), try to "match" it with a similar good deed in private. This keeps your heart grounded. How to Handle Praise: If someone praises you for a good deed, don't let it feed your ego. Instead, turn it back to Allah in your heart and (if appropriate) verbally. You can say, "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is for Allah) and make a silent dua like, "O Allah, do not hold me to account for what they say, and forgive me for what they do not know." 3. Understand the Consequences of Riya Constantly remind yourself of what Riya actually does: It Nullifies Your Reward: A hadith warns that on the Day of Judgment, a person who did deeds to be seen will be told by Allah: "Go to those for whom you made a show in the world and see if you find any reward with them." (Musnad Ahmad) It is a Major Sin: It is a form of shirk.
