You’re exactly right! Not only that, but Mexico asks USA citizens for 200-300k in savings to be able to apply for a NORMAL residency visa. It’s only fair honestly 🤷🏽‍♀️some of my family were complaining they he moved the visiting visa from $6 to $30, yet they don’t realize that visiting visa for USA citizens is actually $50 imposed from Mexico. It’s all gotta be fair and equal

That is inaccurate. B1 visas are a contract and they can be here earning a wage that is set by the b1 visa program. If they quit or are terminated the employer has to pay for their flight home, just like they have to pay for their flight here. It’s highly watched by the department of homeland as well as the department of labor. The employer also has to provide housing.

As someone that is in-house at a big tech company and have dealt with a lot of this - the 100k fee is not high enough. If it was 100k PER YEAR, that would help. Also, not applying it to current visa holders was a huge mistake. There are way too many of them here already.

Not only does the company pay them less, they hold the visas over their heads as a means of control to force obedience.

A quick Google search will show you that there were many many companies who hired thousands of foreign workers well also laying off tens of thousands of US employees.

That’s true but there are loopholes to avoid the $100k. If they’re already here, they avoid the fee. Or they could use L1.

An H1B visa absolutely costs the employer more than $200 currently, by a lot. I hear what you’re saying but overexaggering to this degree is problematic. Most companies who pursue H1B visas for their employees also have to have in house counsel to facilitate the process, which of course incurs additional costs. You’re right that H1B workers are often taken advantage of though.

Worked for a tax firm in 2024. They paid a bookkeeper in Nigeria roughly $10/hour and paid a bookkeeper in America roughly $25/hour. They did the same job. But they also started outsourcing tax prep to India which was substantially cheaper, like pennies on the dollar but still charging the customer the same if not more.

It’s flawed based on my preliminary research for a couple reasons. For companies that hire H1B workers abroad, for roles that can hire off shore they will opt to do that instead of hiring U.S. citizens. Essentially for this to work in my opinion (which is to generate more revenue for the government and incentivize hiring U.S. citizens), they would have to have the 100K fee for H1B workers, a annual fee of 20-30K for hiring off shore, and subsequently providing tax incentives for hiring U.S. citizens. To add a nuance, maybe having companies with less than 10-50 employees still hire H1B workers while giving them tax incentives to hire inside the country. That way smaller startups ramping can hire & scale and larger companies decide to hire internally & dissuade from off shoring.

it is a bit tricky. This could help hire more American workers, good. But when it comes to paying wages for foreigners, it is different, if our currency is much stronger, paying same amount could create an unfair power for that foreigner working here relative to their countrymen, which has potential to cause problems elsewhere, disrupt their economy, cause unwanted jealousy, etc. When dealing with situations like that, I know one volunteer place that pays a fair wage, like 3x their local min wage for certain artistic work. It's fair and enough to help them get on their feet. If salary too high, it could out price the workers it meant to help, if everyone else gets $10/hr (in local currency) and you find working for American company nets you like $1000 hour, everyone will rush to get the job, or neighbors may get jealous If it s a poor country could lead to crime. Perhaps something like that

I agree. The work visas are unfair to both the American workers and the foreign workers. This helps balance it out a bit better.

I wonder how much outsourcing will result from this. Companies can offshore companies to hire cheaper workers and not pay the $100,000 H1B visa application fee. Plus, they don’t have to pay expensive benefits that are required in the United States, like healthcare. I’m not sure this is the perfect fix, but it is a step.
