I love being unapologetically, authentically myself as a therapist. I feel that in itself is therapeutic because it allows my clients to do the same, a lot of times for the first time in their life. I cannot say though that this has not made other therapists genuinely dislike me.

exactly, being yourself/human ≠ centering yourself!! you’d think that’d be obvious with the therapeutic relationship being so, so important. without the connection aspect it’s just a standardized modality where a client can be matched with any clinician that does their needed modality

Thank you so much for this! I hate how we show our clients so much empathy and then have virtually none for each other!

Wait, we aren’t supposed to drink anything but water? 8:00 am appointments with no coffee?

Totally their own anxiety talking! I hate the attack against any different modality too.

Yes! It’s so weird to be like… you can’t disclose or else it centers you…. Like… no it doesn’t. Maybe it’s because I work with adolescents… but I really think that sometimes I’m the first adult these kids have ever seen that is authentic acknowledge that life is rough… or that’s also gone through similar experiences. So many adults pretend to have it all put together and it’s so alienating…. Maybe that’s just my perspective because I work with children..

These little ways in which we humanize ourselves is so important imo. We aren’t going to give a lot of details about who we are personally, so it’s even more important to show up authentically in small ways

I’m only allowed to discreetly drink water. I think a lot of professions find it unprofessional to be thirsty. Anyways I might find certain things a therapist do a little bit disruptive ( seems harsh to say disruptive)but I don’t expect them to plan around me. For example they choose to wear perfume/cologne. It may or may not cause some discomfort. Scents in general can cause me to yucky but that’s life. I’m not going to tell someone to stop xyz

I don’t know, section A.10.C of the ACA code of ethics says, “don’t drink any liquids in front of clients due to its cultural implications.”

my last therapist and I used to hit our vapes together in session lol. my current therapist picked up her dog mid-session to show me. I dont trust a therapist unless I know theyre chill, that rigid fake bs would be an IMMEDIATE no for me.

i'm getting coaching and we both sip on a hot cup of coffee during it. That makes me much more comfortable than a therapist with a glass of water and a noteboard
