An absolutely beautiful and magical night @thepinkagenda Gala!! It was such an honor to receive the Icon Award and even more special to have @mirandamckeon present the award 🩷 Over $340,000 was raised for life saving research- just incredible!! It was wonderful to have my family and friends be part of this evening. I am overwhelmed by all the love and support and cannot express how much this means to me. Sharing parts of my speech here… My beginning with cancer is personal. My grandmother was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer when I was 16 years old. The chemotherapy drug, Taxol, had only been approved for first line treatment of ovarian cancer two years prior. Genetic testing was not routinely being done. There were no targeted therapies. Yet, even back then, misinformation lurked in the dark corners of the Internet, in discussion boards and online forums: juice cleanses and detoxes promising claims and cures that did sound too good to be true but hard to assess in moments of uncertainty. Those early experiences shaped the way I thought about cancer—not just the science of it, which is truly extraordinary and advancing every day, but the very real human side, the fears, and the seemingly endless amount of information people face when they’re at their most vulnerable. While much has changed since then, the reality is that misinformation still exists, disparities persist, and the need for advocacy, education, and communication has never been greater. I firmly believe that every person deserves to understand their options, to feel seen and heard, and to know that their lives during and beyond treatment are just as important as the treatments themselves. In an age where misinformation often spreads faster than the truth, my mission has always been- and will continue to be- to provide accurate evidence-based information that doesn't inspire fear but inspires action. Being embraced by this community as a trusted and reliable voice is a privilege and not one that I take for granted. Although social media certainly has its downsides, it is responsible for bringing so many of the people in this room together and is a true space for education, empowerment and advocacy. Used intentionally, it can be a lifeline, helping people find resources, opening conversations about often stigmatized topics such as survivorship, fertility, sexuality, and mental health. It enables us to reach those who might otherwise feel isolated, reminding them that they are not alone. Receiving this award is an acknowledgement that this work truly matters but it is not just about me. I am inspired every day by my patients and the entire breast cancer community. This is about you. Advocacy is never done alone and it's about what we can do together. Despite the progress we have made in outcomes, we have a lot of work ahead of us. We must shift the narrative that someone is ‘too young’ for cancer. We must push for and demand equitable access to care. We must continue to champion research that not only advances treatment and reduces cancer incidence but also addresses critical gaps in care. We can do this by supporting organizations like The Pink Agenda which directly fund research and amplify the voices of those affected by cancer. Thank you to The Pink Agenda and all of you for this incredible honor. I promise to continue working every day to uphold the values and spirit of this award. ❤️❤️❤️
