Costa Rica has a similar history with Jamaicans who were brought in to work on the railroad many years ago ..

Wong, wrong, wrong. Yes, a vast amount of Jamaicans did went to live and work in Panama but they were not the only Caribbean nationals who migrated to Panama in numbers, Barbadians, Trinidadians and many more Caribbean immigrants also helped to build the Panama Canal and even died there, had children and grandchildren and till this day one can find more Jamaican offsprings but there’re also offsprings that traces back to other Caribbean countries as well. As usual, the Jamaican culture is definitely a dominant presence worldwide into the mix of ago-diaspora yet they’re not the only influence. I caution you not to omit the sacrifices made by other cultures who helped to build the canal. I stayed in Panama and explored the country and observed the cultural mixture of their colorful cultural traditions.

Well, I met an 80-year-old lady from Panama 🇵🇦. At the time, I never knew where she was from, as her accent was similar to Jamaica 🇯🇲, but at the same time, she was speaking Spanish, so I was a bit confused. I was brave enough to ask her. Where are you from? She was smiling with me. She asked me, 'Why do you ask?' I said, 'Your accent sounds like Jamaican.' She said, 'OK.' I am from Panama. I said Panama. Anyway, we started to have a conversation and she started to give me the history and said her grandparents come from Jamaica we also talked about food and different and also explained the difference between food. And why she said when her grandparents come from Jamaica, they gotta use what the native people use and mix with Jamaican. Style.

Listen Lady , a lot of Jamaicans , Bajans and other Caribbean groups went to Panama for the canal. But this is one distinct group. Most Panamanians dont have this origin. The ones u see in Brooklyn usually have this origin.

Wasn’t only Jamaicans and they all had kids with native Panamanians and indigenous and so on and so on. In my family my great grandfather was from Barbados. Us black or Caribbean Panamanians eat souse etc. and this point all those Caribbean cultures are mixed up in Panama that’s why our patois is unique as well as our Spanish. But no one speaks English in Panama today. That generation is dying out.

Sorry guys but the caribian influence in Panama in large part was caused by the building of the canal and while the railroad played a part it was many indigenous people that were originally involved. due to malaria many whites died which spurred the need to recruit from the surrounding islands. Jamaica being the largest island and hence population source a higher amount came to Panama. That said several citizens from other Caribbean nations came over time seeking jobs. many stayed and many returned to their home of origin and many resettled elsewhere to include North, central, and south America. all said Panama is like many other countries around the world , with its population influenced by world events. in this instance the building of the Panama Canal
