In an ideal world, I’d be able to swear in this video. But, bound as I am by the algorithmic gods, I will to talk about #BS , instead. In 2005, the philosopher Harry #Frankfurt wrote a book about BS and why it’s not only different to standard #lying , but it’s far, far more dangerous to society. According to Frankfurt the difference between a #lie and BS is the concern for the #truth . When someone lies, they want to substitute their lie for the truth. They want you to think what they are saying is true. They do this because they, consciously or not, still respect the idea of truth. They accept there’s value in truth. The BSer, though, will say whatever they want to get their own way. They might say false things or true things. They might say irrelevant things or distracting things. They will say whatever they want for some #manipulative purpose. In this, they don’t care about the truth at all. Truth has no value. And that’s why they’re so dangerous. So why are we so accepting of BS? Well, Frankfurt says one reason is that everyone is expected to have an opinion on everything. You have to have an opinion on the Middle East, on the US election, on religion, on parenting, on sports, and so on. Of course, no one can know everything, and so people BS. They say things not to reach truth but to be seen as knowledgeable. One of the best ways to reduce the amount of BS is to not only admit we don’t know something but to accept when others say so too. #philosophy
