The first time I wrote my own song was in 6th grade. Like many first songs, it wasn’t very good, but I wanted to wanted to sound like Greenday and Avril Lavigne and other mainstream alt rock artists. I studied classical voice at an arts high school and let’s just say I was definitely the different one, sort of the underdog of my class who had a hard time with French and German art songs. I can’t lie and say I practiced that style much. I was mainly working on belting during band practice. My first band was a post punk stoner rock group we used to call Flashbang. I remember writing my first really good and angsty song with them, “Pr*ck (Afraid To Lose). Everyone in the neighboring schools knew us and we won a battle of the bands senior year! Things changed a lot in college though. When going to Berklee College of Music as a songwriting major, I learned an insane amount on everything technical and artistic, but my music taste moved from mainly rock sub genres to neo soul, funk, and jazz. I’m grateful for that infusion of new genres. I even started my long time band with a friend under that premise and call is Soulpax. (We still write today and create retro pop). I will however say that I became very jaded and elitest about my past inspirations. Now to throw any shade, but a lot of kids and professors at Berklee didn’t care for the simplicity of rock or pop when they could ride their secondary dominant chord progressions to the moon. Needing to write a song or 2 a week as a songwriting major, my music was picked apart on a daily basis and it became hard to separate my internal writer from my editor. I had to do a lot of unlearning. After being back home from school for a number of years, I’ve come back to my roots! It took me a long time because of lack of confidence, but the music in my heart will always be alt rock, punk, and grunge. I create sophisticated music with Soulpax, but this project, Julz The Great, is for me to reconnect with what’s close to my heart. Right now, you’re listening to my song “VMPR”, which is about standing up for yourself against someone or something that is constantly draining your joy and energy. I have a lot of music for this project that I’ve already written and am excited to release, and now that I have a new job, I can finally make higher quality recordings and release music more often! I also plan on rereleasing my second tune, “Millennium Wage” very very soon. The first time I posted it, it went viral, so I know it’s a good one. If you’d IG what you hear and also like my song Millennium Wage, please follow me and stick around for the rerelease and plenty of fresh releases! Thanks for reading this far. I know you could have been anywhere else, but the fact that you stuck it through with me here means a lot. Thanks 🖤 #creatorsearchinsights #altgirl #altrock #myemergingartistjourney #altadults #musiciansoftiktok
