@gradschooltips: yall😳 as a bioethics and science comms girlie, we gotta talk about the ethics involved in the Sept 22 statements by President Trump on acetaminophen use during pregnancy. 👀 First, it's SO challenging to make definitive statements about the safety and efficacy of interventions for pregnant people because it's ethically impermissible to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) on them. 🏆 This is because RCTs, which are considered to be reliable in experimental research, involve exposing a group of participants to a new or experimental treatment while a control group receives a placebo or standard care. 🚨For pregnant individuals, this poses an unacceptable risk to both the individual and the developing fetus. The potential for harm, such as congenital disabilities, miscarriage, or complications for the pregnant person, is too great. ⭐️The principle of "do no harm" also known as non-maleficence is a cornerstone of medical ethics and takes precedence here‼️ #NonTradPreMed #Bioethics #MedicalEthics #HealthPolicy #PreMed

So are you saying that it’s possible for Neurodevelopmental issues to be from Tylenol usage and pregnancy? I was thinking that it was possible but it’s kind of overdramatized by them. Plus not to mention a woman who is sick during pregnancy might be taking more Tylenol and that could be the effective pregnancy and not Tylenol, etc.

Too dangerous to clinically test but not dangerous enough to question is a wild combination.

I've never loved the idea that we are calling it "safe" when in fact we cannot fully ethically test on pregnant women, like of course we can do the best we can with the data we do have but calling it completely safe doesnt feel right. I for one have issue with the conversation of its potential endocrine dysrupting effects for a fetus that some have looked at. Again, not perfect data to conclude it as "not safe" but enough to make me go hmmm this needs caution. Not saying it should be completely demonized though either. There's too much nuance. Do I think its an OTC drug that is a little too normalized? sure. Yet I also fear that many will not take it when it is very necessary now (i.e. high fevers) due to a lack of common sense. Even as someone that reaches for natural fixes first especially for smaller aches and pains...

I mean there are methods that can be used to identify causal inference from observational data, but I agree that this blame on Tylenol is ridiculous

this is why we will never have studied about the devils lettuce and pregnancy. we know the outcomes of self reported mothers who did, which gives us that information, but people claiming there’s no real studies about it do not understand why that is - and then they equate the lack of them as proof it’s harmless

It was debunked by Swedish sibling studies anyway, took the association compeltly away. His masses didn't care about these studies until master orange told them to
