UPDATE 3 - Major Typhoon Ragasa (former PH name ‘Nando’): As Typhoon Ragasa currently holds the title of the strongest tropical cyclone so far into the 2025 Worldwide Cyclone Season, Ragasa itself has been struggling with maintaining its intensity as it gets extremely close to the coasts of Southern China, now down to a mid-end Category 3 major typhoon, in which the storm is expected to make landfall in the region within the next 4 to 6 hours. As of right now, Typhoon Ragasa currently has maximum sustained winds of up to 120mph (~195kph) with an estimated central air pressure of 948mb, moving west-northwest at an estimated speed of 16mph. Ragasa currently just lies under 20 miles (~30km) away from making landfall in Southern China through the Guangdong province; however, as mentioned above, the storm’s west-northwestward movement may cause the storm to delay making an official landfall by at least a few hours, though, unfortunately, landfall is indeed inevitable. Rainfall estimates throughout the Guangdong and Hainan provinces in China come in at slightly more than 12 inches (>~300mm), enough for life-threatening flooding. Videos coming from impacted regions show extremely strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall from Typhoon Ragasa. Meteorological agencies expect the storm to maintain typhoon status of at least Category 1 on the SSHWS until it gets back to waters via the Gulf of Tonkin, where the storm is subject to sea surface temperatures of over 31 degrees Celsius for a brief timeframe (<6 hours) before making its final landfall in Northern Vietnam, where an additional 7 inches (~175mm) of rainfall is likely to be dumped from Ragasa. The storm is expected to dissipate by the 26th of September, according to the JTWC’s latest advisory.
