@newsroomgy: Typhoon Ragasa, one of the strongest storms in years, has battered Hong Kong and southern China after leaving a trail of destruction across Taiwan and the Philippines. At least 27 people have died, including 17 in Taiwan where a barrier lake burst in Hualien county, and ten in the northern Philippines after boats were swept away by powerful waves. Nearly 1.9 million people were evacuated across Guangdong province in preparation for the storm, which made landfall on Hailing Island with winds of up to 241 km/h. In Hong Kong and Macao, fierce winds and heavy rain caused flooding, knocked down trees, and forced closures of schools, flights, and businesses. Hundreds of residents sought shelter in temporary centres, and rescue teams used inflatable boats to reach those trapped by rising waters. Authorities have warned that Ragasa remains highly dangerous as it moves inland, with torrential rain expected to continue across the region in the coming days. (SOURCES: AP News and BBC)
