She's canonically pretty, but there's nothing else for her to be proud of in herself. The people around her finding her superficial especially didn't help. May's stressed out, and she never had any friends or anyone to rely on (she had an aunt, but she barely took care of her), that leads to her basic hygiene being unfulfilled, because there was nobody to teach her to begin with.
