Akaza actually challenged Kokushibo a few times before, and Kokushibo spared him because he saw potential in him and genuinely enjoyed the fight.
Normally, Kokushibo devours any of the other demons who challenge him for his rank, so despite the insane gap in power, Akaza must have done something to impress him. Also every time Akaza declares that he will surpass and kill him, Kokushibo never criticizes him for it-instead, he tells him to do his best.
Which is crazy, because Kokushibo hates weaklings even more than Akaza does. I know we're supposed to glaze Kokushibo right now, but if he never downplayed Akaza, that shows Akaza earned at least some form of respect from him. So if people want to call
themselves Kokushibo fans, they should acknowledge that too. Both characters are incredible, and I'm not being biased toward either one.
Also, when Kokushibo found out Akaza was dead, you could tell how upset he was because he had expectations for him. I don't think he believed Akaza could actually defeat him, but he definitely wanted to see him evolve more as a warrior.
