The #English writer John Ruskin argued that there are only five honourable professions. There might be hundreds or thousands of #jobs within these. But ultimately, Ruskin argued that there are only five professions. First, there are #soldiers whose aim is to #defend society. Their job is to fight until the end and protect the people behind their shields. Second, there are pastors, who are there to #teach society. Their concern is for #truth , reason, and to fight falsehood. Third, there are physicians who should keep society healthy. They should not flee during plague, but be there to always help the sick. Fourth, there are lawyers whose only concern is #justice . They should be fair and equal and stamp out injustices wherever they find them. Finally, there are merchants whose aim is in providing for society. They feed us and provide us with conveniences and comfort. The point of Ruskin's division was to show just how complex society can be, and how we all play our own unique role. But it was also intended to define what ‘honourable’ and ‘duty’ actually meant. Because an honourable soldier or #doctor or educator is one who works towards their purpose without distraction. They will risk poverty, sickness, and even death for their profession. A lawyer who can be bought is dishonourable. They've betrayed their pursuit of justice. A teacher who knowingly teaches falsehoods, or a journalist who prints propaganda has betrayed the truth. They've betrayed who they are. So, which of Ruskin's professions are you? And do you think you'll always stay true to the #duty that that entails?
