@itsjustcinema: “Belladonna of Sadness” is one of the most beautiful animated films ever made. But don’t be fooled by its dreamy visuals, because underneath is this haunting story about cruelty, power and resistance. #cinema #animation #belladonnaofsadness #whattowatch #movierecommendation
"so beautiful, but so hard to look at" just like a powerful woman. it's beautiful what women can do but some people don't want to see it

Omg I was obsessed with this movie and the original book. The original novel ‘Les Sorciere’ was written by Jules Michelet in 1862 and was later republished and translated with the name ‘Witchcraft, Sorcery, and Superstition’. Michelet was obsessed with the occult and paganism in medieval times. He recounts sociological impacts of pagan people who were converted to Christianity while weaving it to a fictional narrative.

This movie was awful, with no solace offered other than the strength of human will-power and perseverance. I guess sometimes the resolution is there is no resolution.

Literally one of my favorite movies ever - I don't often reccomend it though due to the heavy subject matters. I connect with it on such a spiritual level

Belladonna of sadness is also one of the reasons we have the incredible visual character style of Yoshiaki Kawajiri - whose work you probably know if you watched Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, and the samurai fight from The Animatrix.

if I remember well; also the last film of the Osamu Tezuka's production company... pretty sad! It was considered like garbage, until the 2000, considered now a treasure of animation! someone correct if I'm wrong, it's like 8 years since I read the info on this movie

look up any triggers u have for this movie tho cuz I don’t have any but I turned it off cuz it was too much of that on screen. It made the movie not watchable for me tbh cuz why is that so much on screen as a plot point when it wasn’t needed.

This film is so beautiful and well-made, but it is also one of the most graphic and upsetting films I’ve ever seen.

This really is an incredible movie on every level. It’s too bad that there wasn’t enough in the budget to animate the full movie (since many scenes are only still images) HOWEVER, when the animated scenes do show up, they are breathtaking!

Please feature Lisa Crafts’ 70s-era Desire Pie. I just curated a solo show of her work in Brooklyn, NY and it was sold out. Everyone was completely blown away
