A friend that wants to hire you is either going to be one of your best working relationships or one of your worst. Here’s how you can ensure it’s the latter (and if you never want to work with your friends and need an easy out, I’ve got a tip for ya at the end of this). If you’ve been hired by a friend, the key ingredient for a successful partnership is communication. You need to communicate effectively at the start of the project: 1. You will be charging for the project. Many times, friends that aren’t entrepreneurs don’t understand that this isn’t the same thing as asking fo your help moving a couch, this is your business. When you’re on your business’ time, you need to be either working for paying customers, or working on finding paying customers. 2. Your friendship matters more than anything going on here. I over communicate that my feelings can’t be hurt when it comes to business, and encourage them to say something (humorously) awful about the work just to get rid of any nervousness. 3. Everything you suggest to them is for the good of their project. You’re advocating for their success here, anything idea you present is to make them look awesome. Ok, so what if you just want to avoid this altogether and not work with a friend who’s asking? Just say this: “I don’t have enough availability to give this the attention I’d want to, but let me help you find someone who does. What’s the budget range you want to stick to? (And if they don’t have one, maybe recommend one)” Have you ever been hired by a friend? How’d it go and what did you learn?
