@beeraficionado: Replying to @🗣devon *Newark, DE (not NJ, my bad) not great news here and sounds like something major changed over the last month. Do you think this is more about the challenges of running a brewery in 2025 or a restaurant? Perhaps the perfect storm? #ironhillbrewery #craftbeer #brewpub
Former employee - at fault of private equity. In 2016 - the original owners decided to turn to PE to expand, worked well pre COVID, but hit bad post COVID. Over expansion, loss of local feel, and a lack of innovation on the beer/cullinary side.

The Phoenixville location could get never get anyone to staff it. Service when it was there was awful and slow. Have to think management really

the head brewer Lappy passed away about a year ago, he was good at keeping folks on task, and the beer was well made. this might have slipped since he passed.

Was unique 20+ yrs ago when there just were not many places like it. Kept adding locations but food became average overtime and beer did not evolve or elevate to compete with so many new and more organic local breweries. Shame none-the-less.

Oh that’s terrible. I remember going to Newark in 2002 or 2003 and really enjoying both the food and beer.

They had great service, solid food, okay and sometimes excellent beer. The restaurants were big and kind of stuffy like an upper middle-class steakhouse.
They are mostly located in nicer suburbs or gentrified areas with a lot of competition. I never had a bad experience at one but nor have I had a memorable one.

It's so insanely fucked up that multiple companies have done this to their employees with zero notice recently

I live near a location that was part of first closings. Historically they were great, food was good, would love to get growlers and great seasonal releases. But I think quality dipped over time.

A friend was at the Hershey, PA location Wednesday evening and had a great meal and reported it was packed. Reading the threads and seeing the mention of Private Equity…well it makes sense now. Can’t blame founders BUT hope they didn’t keep a stake in the PE ownership in lieu of cash. PE is in fact the devil. Maybe if the tax code taxed them at a similar rate to the average owner with an S corp, they wouldn’t be able to pay next to nothing in taxes, keep the profits and cover initial costs, then exit and close down at first sign of troubles.

The food was mediocre at best and they opened in Greenville SC which has a ton of established breweries. Dumb move on their part.
