@perezbrenna: While I work on a longer series, please enjoy ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS IN THE WORLD: The Aqueduct of Segovia, built nearly 2000 years ago by the Romans. No matter how many times I’ve seen this thing, I’m still awestruck by the engineering marvel. #History #explained #spain #storytime #architecture
you had to explain what an "aqueduct" was used for? wow...just wow

In use until 1973! That means there was an unbroken lineage (until recently) of engineers maintaining and inspecting it. It would be wild to be responsible for a bit of roman design still in use.

I didn’t realize “rio” literally means “river.” The Rio Grande is literally named “Big River” in Spanish 😆

I saw a Spaniard who said that this bridge is not Roman, it is medieval, but they sell it as Roman only to attract tourists.

Obviously they don't have earthquakes in that part of the world! Here in California where I am, that thing would be toast in a couple of decades.

This construction method doesn't work in freezing climates. Ice would destroy it.

for some reason, it being in use until 1973 seems crazier than no cement or mortar

Do they actually say it has no mortar? I thought most all stonework needed mortar to hold together?

Shocking to realize the level of architectural magnificence that existed, and that we lost because of the dark ages and the middle ages. Astounding, how incredibly intelligent the Romans and the Greeks were.
