The Affair of the Diamond Necklace (1784 - 85). At the request of King Louis XV, Parisian jewellers Boehmer and Bassenge designed an extravagant diamond necklace. You can see a full-scale replica in the Marie Antoinette exhibit at the V&A. Originally intended as a gift for his mistress, Madame du Barry, the king died before the necklace was completed. Thus, the necklace remained unsold. Skip forward to the 1780s, Cardinal de Rohan, desperate to regain Queen Marie Antoinette’s favour, became the target of Jeanne de la Motte, a conwoman descended from Henry II of France. Jeanne convinced Rohan that he could secretly help the Queen purchase the necklace to prove his loyalty. She forged letters and even arranged a nighttime meeting with a woman impersonating Marie Antoinette. Believing he was serving the Queen, Rohan arranged for the necklace to be delivered to Jeanne de la Motte, who promptly stole it. On the 15 August 1785, the scheme was exposed during a public scandal. Rohan was arrested at the Palacr of Versailles; Jeanne de la Motte and accomplices were also apprehended. A sensational trial was held. The Cardinal was acquitted, but Jeanne is convicted and publicly whipped, branded, and imprisoned (though she later escaped). Despite her innocence, Marie Antoinette was widely suspected of involvement, this speculation was fuelled by the publication of Jeanne's memoir and publicy sympathy for Cardinal Rohn. The scandal fuelled popular distrust and hatred of the Queen, tarnishing her image as “Madame Déficit” and accelerated the erosion of royal prestige before the French Revolution. #fyp #historytok #LearnOnTikTok #fashion #marieantoinette
