These seals are three times fatter than they should be, so fat that it drew the attention of scientists. So fat that they even got classified as a new species. Scientists just discovered a new species of seals living in Greenland's Icefjord 2 years ago. These seals have been completely genetically isolated from every other ringed seal population on Earth for over one hundred thousand years. During that massive stretch of time, they evolved totally different fur patterns, much larger body sizes, and specialized adaptations to their unique fjord habitat. But what comes next left scientists clueless. Regular ringed seals migrate thousands of kilometers across the Arctic, but these big fat seals never leave their home, The Ilulissat Icefjord. All three thousand of them just stay put in this one location, living at incredibly high densities, almost like packing a continent’s population into one neighborhood. Which is actually really odd behavior, because it could mean only three things: 1: The fjord has super rich food sources, 2: They’ve evolved to survive in crowded conditions Or 3: There is something they are actively avoiding outside of the fjord. And this is just the tip of the iceberg too. The Kangia Ringed Seals is just one of the many mysteries that the Arctic is hiding. The Arctic is probably hiding thousands of unknown species tucked away in fjords all across. Which also means that climate change is destroying all this biodiversity that we didn’t even know existed.
