Causes / Risk Factors Biological Hormonal changes (↓ estrogen, ↓ testosterone, menopause, postpartum, after oophorectomy) Chronic medical illnesses (diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, cancer) Certain medications (antidepressants – SSRIs, antihypertensives, hormonal contraceptives) Psychological Depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem History of trauma or sexual abuse Social / Relationship Marital conflict, lack of intimacy, poor communication Cultural or religious beliefs about sex Clinical Features Reduced or absent sexual thoughts/fantasies Lack of interest in initiating or participating in sexual activity Distress due to low desire Strained relationship with partner Diagnosis Detailed history (medical, psychiatric, sexual, relationship) Use of FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index) or DSDS (Decreased Sexual Desire Screener) Treatment & Management Plan for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in females: 1. General / Lifestyle Management Education & Counseling: Explain that HSDD is common and treatable. Healthy Lifestyle: Balanced diet, regular exercise, good sleep. Avoid Triggers: Reduce alcohol, smoking, and stress. Improve Intimacy: Encourage communication with partner, schedule private/quality time. 2. Psychotherapy / Counseling Sex Therapy / Couples Counseling: Helps improve relationship and communication. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Corrects negative thoughts about sex. Mindfulness Therapy: Reduces anxiety and improves focus on intimacy. 3. Medical / Pharmacological Treatment Correct Medical Causes: Treat thyroid disease, diabetes, or depression if present. Adjust Offending Drugs: If antidepressants or antihypertensives reduce desire, consider alternatives.
