A lot folks aren’t familiar with beauty product development here on socials, especially since there are so many more cosmetic chemists on platform comparatively! Not to be confused with cosmetic chemists, here are some of the main differences and nuances between the roles: In corporate and manufacturing environments (which have have differences, we’ll get into this later) more often than not, Cosmetic Chemists are given a brief or blueprint on the product desired by the marketing and product development teams. The product developer is very much a translator of sorts optimizing what marketing wants and what the chemistry can achieve. The chemists are (obviously) more technical, and while they would never select exactly what the shade would be, they create it based off of what marketing and product development says. The truth is that every part of the development lifecycle of a product is critical, as are all the people involved who make products come to life. Not all beauty product developers are the same. Some work more closely with chemists than others (me). Some beauty product developers are more technical than others. And also, some beauty product developers are also cosmetic chemists. To be clear, I am NOT a cosmetic chemist, (and I never claimed to be one!) In my career, I’ve worked VERY closely with chemists, in both corporate, manufacturing, and consulting, and still do so on a daily basis. The science and formulation of product is always something that fascinated me, and I always strive to understand and question to deepen my knowledge. But most of my obsession stems in breaking it down so EVERYONE can understand it. I can’t go into the complexities of formula so deeply the way a cosmetic chemist could because I am limited in my knowledge. However, I can certainly at a high level understand and communicate how formulas work for people, combining an artistry and technical product development lens. As social platforms garner more popularity, we foresee more experts and professionals sharing their opinions and perspectives. Remember that people bring different expertise to the table. What we do here is bring you my love and passion for learning through beauty products and my beauty product development lens of being in the beauty industry for almost two decades. On this platform, our goal is to show up intentionally every day. Aiming to teach you something and connect more deeply with yourself through the joy and play of beauty.
